Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 4 cups vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix warm milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  3. Combine wet and dry ingredients, knead until smooth. Let rise for 1 hour.
  4. Roll out dough and cut into donut shapes. Let rise for another 30 minutes.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pan and fry donuts until golden brown.
  6. In a saucepan, combine milk, sugar, cornstarch, and salt over medium heat. Cook until thickened.
  7. Whisk egg yolks in a bowl, then temper with hot milk mixture. Return to heat, stirring until thick.
  8. Remove from heat, stir in butter and vanilla extract. Let cool.
  9. Fill donuts with custard using a piping bag.

Notes

  • For best results, let the custard cool completely before filling the donuts.
  • Dust filled donuts with powdered sugar before serving.
