A delicious traditional Lebanese dessert made from thin noodle-like pastry soaked in syrup.

Ingredients

  • 1 package Knafeh (thin pastry)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon rose water
  • 1 tablespoon orange blossom water
  • 1/4 cup crushed pistachios for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the Knafeh pastry with melted butter until well coated.
  3. Spread half of the pastry mixture in a greased baking dish, pressing firmly to create an even layer.
  4. In another bowl, combine the ricotta and mozzarella cheeses and spread this mixture over the pastry layer.
  5. Top with the remaining pastry mixture and press down.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  7. While the Knafeh is baking, prepare the syrup by boiling sugar and water together for 10 minutes. Add rose water and orange blossom water.
  8. Once the Knafeh is done baking, pour the hot syrup evenly over the top.
  9. Let it cool slightly before serving, and garnish with crushed pistachios.

Notes

  • Can be served warm or at room temperature.
  • For extra flavor, you can add a pinch of cinnamon to the cheese mixture.
